The Golisano Center for Special Needs (GCSN) at Upstate Medical University

The Golisano Center for Special Needs (GCSN) at Upstate Medical University is an essential link for children and families across Central New York providing optimal outcomes for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). GCSN’s goals are to meet the needs of the community through novel approaches, decreasing waitlists, increasing referrals, promoting research and training, and developing community partnerships. Since inception, referral times have decreased from 182 to 54 days and referrals received have increased 54.5%. The center’s growth is highlighted by the development of an 11-bed inpatient unit that will serve children with ASD and co-morbid mental health diagnoses – one of only 12 such programs nationwide.
