WHY I WALK?
I walk for Autism Speaks. I walk for the many kids who I have the privilege to work with. They have impacted my life in many ways. As a behavioral therapist, I have seen the struggles the families go through at home and in public just for their children to be accepted and understood. I walk for awareness and for acceptance because I have seen and experienced first hand how much someone who is not fully aware of what autism is can be so judgmental.
I walk for my daughter, as of now she does not have a diagnosis but I see every single one of my clients in her. I walk because it’s about Lighting It Up Blue so that people who are unaware begin to ask, what is autism?
I walk to show those who know me that you can support and be an advocate even without having someone in your family be on the spectrum.
On October 22nd, as I crossed the finish line at the Autism Speaks Walk, I will take a deep breath and cheer on friends and family who Light It Up Blue for autism awareness and acceptance.
So to answer your question, why I walk — I walk because 1 in every 68 children is being diagnosed with autism. I hope you join me and walk even if your loved ones are not on the spectrum, we are all in this together.
